Nishath Ahmed is a textile designer, educator and artist residing in Scottsdale, Arizona. She graduated from Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, India in 2001 where she also served as faculty in the Textile department. Nishath draws inspiration from the rich textile and craft heritage of India, as well as from around the world, wherein the Japanese tie-dye craft of Shibori has remained her focus for several of her exhibitions and large-scale corporate artworks.
As an educator she is passionate about inspiring students to explore the power of textiles to convey stories and bridge cultures. Several of the courses that she has taught on Traditional Textiles, Creative Embroidery, Storyboarding and Exploring Mixed Media for Surface Design, embody this ideology. As a community member, Nishath truly believes in the transformative power of art to be a catalyst for social change and betterment. Ever since she moved to the USA in 2006, having lived in numerous cities in America, she understands the importance of community and has been committed to providing voluntary services at refugee centers and community sewing programs that work for a social cause. Making over a 100 hand painted batik banners for her children’s school fundraiser was her most memorable creative experience yet.
Nishath’s vision is to leverage the universal language of textiles to foster understanding, connectivity, and compassion amongst diverse communities. She believes that through her artistic works and community engagement, she can empower people to embrace and grow in their creative pursuits. In her free time she enjoys exploring the beauty of nature through hiking, biking and being outdoors with family and friends .She also loves to find opportunities to learn new creative techniques to enhance her artistic expression.
