About Us

Melissa Bryant is an arts administrator, community leader, organizational strategist, and advocate for artists whose work is rooted in the belief that art, culture, and storytelling have the power to transform communities. As Executive Director of PHX BIPOC Arts, Melissa leads the organization’s vision, programming, partnerships, and continued growth, with a focus on creating meaningful opportunities for BIPOC artists to develop, connect, and thrive.

Melissa brings a unique combination of experience in arts administration, higher education, program development, student success, and community engagement to her leadership. Prior to becoming Executive Director, she served as Program Director for PHX BIPOC Arts, where she successfully led three cohorts of artists through the organization’s professional development program and played a central role in developing and implementing its curriculum. Through this work, she has supported artists in strengthening their creative practices, building sustainable careers, developing entrepreneurial skills, and cultivating relationships that extend beyond the program itself.

At the heart of Melissa’s work is a deep commitment to artists and the communities they represent. She believes artists are not only creators, but also storytellers, culture bearers, educators, and catalysts for community connection. Her approach to leadership is centered on creating spaces where artists feel seen, valued, and supported while having access to the resources, relationships, and opportunities necessary to grow. She is particularly passionate about supporting Indigenous and BIPOC artists and creating opportunities that honor culture, identity, lived experience, and self-expression.

Melissa’s commitment to Indigenous communities is an important part of her personal and professional journey and has shaped her approach to community-centered arts work. She has collaborated with Cahokia PHX, an Indigenous- and women-led organization focused on creating meaningful arts spaces and opportunities for artists. That experience strengthened her understanding of the importance of cultural connection, representation, and creating spaces where Indigenous artists can share their stories and perspectives. While her work with Cahokia PHX is no longer a primary focus, the relationships and experiences she gained continue to inform her leadership and commitment to Indigenous and BIPOC artists.

As a proud Arizona State University alum, Melissa also brings extensive experience in higher education and student support, where she has built a career centered on helping individuals identify their strengths, navigate opportunities, and achieve their goals towards graduation. She carries that same people-centered approach into her work with artists, pairing strategic leadership with genuine care for the individuals and communities she serves.

Melissa is passionate about building organizations and programs that are successful, meaningful, sustainable, and rooted in community. Her leadership reflects a commitment to expanding access, creating connection, and ensuring that artists, particularly those whose voices and stories have historically been underrepresented, have the support and space to thrive.

Outside of her professional work, Melissa enjoys reading, spending time with family, caring for her plants, and exploring Arizona’s hiking trails.
