Alma S. P. Camarillo is an Artista de Medios Mixtos, (Mixed Media Artist) Born and raised in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona. She is a first-generation Chicanx. Alma specializes in fiber on canvas, feeling most connected with her Oaxacan Indigenous roots. She has been creating art ever since she could hold a pencil and often refers to her life with the book “Harold And The Purple Crayon” as Alma and The Purple Crayon. Art is Alma’s liberation. Alma has been creating since childhood; she is skillful in being resourceful with all mediums. Her work usually incorporates a variety of mediums: mirrors, spray paint, acrylic paint, oil paint, markers, embroidery floss, photographs, and found objects. One of Alma’s creative approaches to art is using it as a medium to convey broader messages of justice and advocacy. Alma believes art is an opportunity to encourage communities to unlock their creative potential. In her free time, she enjoys capturing photography and videography of the community. Alma is a creative director of the albums “Sun of Abdoulaye” and “Kufi Conversations.” Alma has displayed her work in the Arizona State Capitol, Eric Fischl Art Gallery, “Homie it’s Within You (Look Inside),” and recently had her artwork in Venezia, Italy, “Mixing Identities” Exhibit.
